IN-06 No Voter Left Behind

by: Barry Welsh

(We appreciate Barry Welsh's response to EENR support - promoted by pioneer)

I wanted to post this at EENR First, before crossposting at other blogs.  I wasn't able to get here when this story was at it's peak, so I wanted to post here first to thank this community and let you know how important you all are to us.  Thank you!! Barry

For those that have been following the story of the Republican Official attacking a reporter and me getting hit in the eye while stopping the attack, it was all worth it!

For those that may not know the background, here are a few quick links.

Barry Welsh :: IN-06 No Voter Left Behind
Last week, I was contacted by Ball State University Students and members of the African American Community about legitimate voter registrations, turned in on time, not being processed and people not being on the voter rolls for the primary election in Indiana on May 6th.  I was asked to come and stand up with them for voter rights and I went to the Election Board meeting.

One of the Republican Officials attacked a newspaper reporter after the meeting and I jumped in to stop the attack.  I got punched in the eye but stopped the attack.

Yesterday at the close of business, was the final deadline for getting the new registrations processed.  There were almost two thousand new registrations turned in on that final day alone, and 25 of them were Republican.

I am proud to be posting this and informing all, that thanks to the heroic effort of the Democratic voting board members and despite the obstruction of the Republicans, ALL OF THE NEW REGISTRATIONS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED!

No voter will be left behind!  Allow me to caveat that as there might have been a handful that were ineligible or otherwise not legitimate, but that happens each time, and is expected and justified.

Mr Statom, the Republican who launched the attack, was suspended for three days.
The Reporter who was the victim of the attack, continues to do his job, and gets interviewed by other media daily.
As for me, all the registrations were processed and that was the goal, but we received an unbelievable amount of free media, and the poll numbers reflect that.   With your continued help and support, I am going to be the next Congressman from Indiana's 6th District.

A long time Republican and City Council member stopped me on the street in Connersville, Indiana yesterday and told me he was with me 100%.  I said "But Richard you are a " and he stopped me before I could say Republican, and he said "I know, but watching you on TV the other night, my wife said, you think Mike Pence would have jumped in to save that reporter or would he have just watched?  And I laughed at first, then I got to thinking, and I don't think he would have jumped in.
We need someone not afraid to fight for us, so get me some of your yard signs for November."

We shook hands and he walked away.

The times they are a changing, and it is because people like you and me are not going to take it anymore.  We are standing up all across this great land and I thank each of you for all that you do.

No voters will be left behind in this district, and I don't know if we could have accomplished anything more important than that at this time.

I just wanted to again thank all of you from (3.00 / 15)
this community for all of your support.

Yipee!!! (3.00 / 11)
This is great news! This is more proof that when you fight for what is right you can get results. We need more Democrats in Congress who are willing to stand up and fight for voters' rights, health care for all Americans and ending the war in Iraq.

Thanks for coming by! Good luck with your campaign, we're rooting for you!

Netroots Director for Oregon Senate Candidate Jeff Merkley

Awesome, Barry. (3.00 / 9)
Thank you for stepping in to protect people's rights to vote, and I'm sorry to hear you got punched for it, but glad you're OK.

You know.... (3.00 / 5)
I'm not happy that Barry got punched, however, the issue may not have gotten the needed publicity if a fight didn't break out. In a weird way, Barry taking that punch may have shed much needed light on the voting rights issue that made it impossible for the Republicans to get away with it.

Wonderful News!!! (3.00 / 9)
Thank you for letting us know and it is karma that this incident let people know what a great candidate your are.

I love the story of the Republican who wants your yard signs!!!

I loved that story too (3.00 / 5)
That Republican was right, there's no way Pence would have jumped in to help the reporter. People in his own district can't even depend on him to vote to help homeowners struggling to keep a hold of their homes.

That is absolutely fantastic news, Barry! Great work (3.00 / 7)
on the behalf of voters everywhere.  The "Rovian" playbook can only be continued if we allow it.

I have been thinking that I would make a proposition to my Republican friends... that if they will stop telling lies about the Democrats, we will stop telling the truth about them.
Adlai Stevenson

You will be a Excellent Congressman. (3.00 / 7)

Totally agree! (3.00 / 5)
He will be a fighter in the House. Unlike Pence, who fights against legislation that will help working families. Pence does not represent the people of Indiana the way they deserve, I know Barry will.

Netroots Director for Oregon Senate Candidate Jeff Merkley

Thanks for fighting for voters' rights, Barry! (3.00 / 6)
Literally!! And this story shows that when Democrats stand strong and show some backbone, then we earn the respect of voters who otherwise might not support us. that's one of the reasons Kerry lost in 2004; he didn't show any backbone and he didn't fight to count all the votes in Ohio like you did in Indiana in making sure all registrations are processed in this example.

Keep up the good work and keep fighting for change all the way to Congressional victory!

Exactly! (3.00 / 3)
When we stand up and fight, we will earn respect from voters across party lines. There is no political advantage to playing it safe and not fighting for what it right.

I sound like a broken record today but this year we need (3.00 / 6)
not just more but BETTER Democrats in Congress -- and Barry, you just set the standard for what that means!

I am so glad all those registrations were processed, and that those folks know that you will really stand up for your constituents.

And really, who knew that running for Congress was a contact sport!?  Really glad to hear you're doing better, and please give your wife a hug from all of us.

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter. MLK Jr

Just wait until we get closer to Nov! (3.00 / 5)
We're going to be saying "more and better" Democrats thousands of times in a single day!

Netroots Director for Oregon Senate Candidate Jeff Merkley
