Eric Holder: Republican Cowardice and Evening Interactive Open Thread

Senator Jeff Sessions - Scared or just scary looking?

Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee are pissing themselves as usual over their broken-record-mantra of FEAR Teh Terrorists that must NOT be brought onto US soil or...um...well, FEAR!!!!1

Let's discuss, below.

funluvn1 :: Eric Holder: Republican Cowardice and Evening Interactive Open Thread
From WSJ:

Attorney General Eric Holder pushed back at criticism of his decision to use a New York civilian court to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other alleged plotters of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

Mr. Holder, appearing Wednesday before the Senate Judiciary Committee and with families of 9/11 victims seated behind him, said: "Prosecuting the 9/11 defendants in federal court does not represent some larger judgment about whether or not we are at war. We are at war, and we will use every instrument of national power -- civilian, military, law enforcement, intelligence, diplomatic and others -- to win."

snip

At Wednesday's hearing, Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions, of Alabama, said he worried that the 9/11 trials and other national security decisions, signaled that under the Obama administration, fighting terrorism "isn't the priority that it once was; that we can return to the pre 9/11 mentality."

Mr. Holder said "the 9/11 attacks were both an act of war and a violation of our federal criminal law, and they could have been prosecuted in either federal courts or military commissions." He added: "At the end of the day, it was clear to me that the venue in which we are most likely to obtain justice for the American people is in federal court."

Isn't it just amazing that the Republicans are so caught up in their normal fearmongering in order to undermine ANYTHING President Obama or his administration proposes that they are willing to LOSE to the terrahrists?  I love the way AG Holder used the premise of winning to rub ol' Jefferson Beauregard Sessions nose in his defeatist propoganda.

Watch the video below to see how Attorney General Eric Holder puts the Republican Senators in their place.

AG Holder:  "I'm not scared of what Khalid Sheikh Mohammed has to say at trial and no one else has to be afraid either."

For tonights open thread, please discuss your feeling on this issue and share with the rest of us here at Progressive Blue what you think of AG Holders statements to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Oh, and anything else that might be on your mind, as well!

The GOP Anti - National Security Caucus (3.00 / 2)
Where the men are sheep, and the sheep are scared.

What part of "moral leadership and national security go hand in hand" don't they understand?

They're soft by terror.  They run and hide, but manage to pound their chest while doing it.

Many Americans only see surface coverage of these issues, and right - wingers who have a track record that would be laughable if this issue wasn't so serious are constantly propped up by in media the interest of balance (conservatives are political, intellectual, moral, and strategic welfare cases.) An average person's fear of how this might turn out is completely understandable considering the circumstances.  But elected officials either know better, or should know better.

Great coverage, fl1.

Oh yeah-the GOP are such little kids. . . (3.00 / 3)
i dont believe they can tell the difference between actual terror & the manufactured terror their puppet masters tell them to run with. Im serious-i do not think they have objective critical minds anymore. Its like group psychosis. :o  for anyone who wants a good counterview to the scaredy cats in the GOP, Jon Stewart was on fire Monday night. Cant get the link cuz im using my non-smart phone, but its worth a watch. :)  --poligirl  :D

Sessions = Stalin?! (3.00 / 3)
I saw on a PBS documentary how Joseph Stalin strongly opposed the trials at Nuremburg.  He wanted at best a speedy show trial followed by even speedier executions of Nazi war criminals.  The underlying motive was Marshal Joe's fear of a precedent being set; that regimes guilty of mass murder (like Stalin's USSR) would one day be exposed.  Luckily, American and British leaders were not swayed.  At Nuremburg, Nazism was truly defeated, and the groundwork for a free and peaceful Germany was laid.

When today's Republicans oppose putting the planners of 9/11 on open trial, where their crimes can be explained, documented, and punished.....when today's Republicans oppose the investigation of our government's violations of the Geneva Conventions, where those crimes can be explained, documented, and punished.....what are they REALLY afraid of?

They fear an end to the war itself, and the antidote to war is understanding.  One cannot have understanding in a world of secret prisons, military commissions, and the lack of due process.  Then again, that's their point, is it not?

The bad news is that my Representative and two Senators are in the minority.  The good news is that my Representative and two Senators are in the minority.

Straight up, that is a fine and introspective answer to the question. (0.00 / 0)
Thank you SO much for your insightful input.

Thank you, funluvn1. (0.00 / 0)
Happy to put in my two cents.

As an aside, dosen't Jeff Sessions look a little like Christopher Pike after he's been scarred by Delta rays in Classic Trek's "The Menagerie"?  Heck, they even both live in worlds of complete illusion!  THAT is scary.

The bad news is that my Representative and two Senators are in the minority.  The good news is that my Representative and two Senators are in the minority.

Think the Tea Baggers either have reptile brains or overgrown amigdalas.

President Obama tries to use language that avoids stirring those regions up, but the puppetmasters' ventriloquists are working overtime.
