WWJD about Health Care? aka. Where are the Good Samaritans?

by: jamess

Sun Aug 30, 2009 at 16:13:34 PM EDT

What would Jesus Do about Health Care?

Good Question.

Well it sounds, like he understood how Sick People need Doctors:

Mark 2:17 GWT

When Jesus heard that, he said to them, "Healthy people don't need a doctor; those who are sick do. I've come to call sinners, not people who think they have God's approval."

(emphasis added)

GOP Health Care Obstructionists, are you Listening???

The Pharisees, thought they were doing God's work too.

Imagine their surprise when this upstart Carpenter, from the old neighborhood, dared to stand up to their blatant self-righteousness ... and dish back to them some cold, hard truth ...

jamess :: WWJD about Health Care? aka. Where are the Good Samaritans?
Perhaps one of the most relevant things this Carpenter had to say, to the self righteous religious leaders of that time, about caring for others, was this:

The Parable of the Good Samaritan
Luke 10:29-37 NIV

But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"

In reply Jesus said: "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.

But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two silver coinse and gave them to the innkeeper. 'Look after him,' he said, 'and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.'

"Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?"

The expert in the law replied, "The one who had mercy on him."

Jesus told him, "Go and do likewise."

(emphasis added)

"Go and do likewise."  ... Hmmmm, good advice!

Sounds, like Jesus wants us to be more like the Good Samaritan, and less like "those who look the other way"!

Here's a few more words of wisdom, that our runway Profit-based Society, would be wise, to take to heart:

Proverbs 22:22 NIV

Do not exploit the poor because they are poor and do not crush the needy in court

1 John 3:17 NIV

If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?

Mark 8:36 NAS

For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?

Luke 12:15 NIV

Then he said to them, "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions."

Proverbs 22:16 DRB

He that oppresseth the poor, to increase his own riches, shall himself give to one that is richer, and shall be in need.
(emphasis added)

And the Golden Rule (which is found in most Religions)
Luke 6:31 NAS

Treat others the same way you want them to treat you.
(emphasis added)

Interesting. What IF "the shoe were on the other foot", Obstructionists? Beware, because one day, it could be!

What if someone YOU cared about, were in such desperate need? Would you break open your wallet then?

What would give Public Health Care to the Sick, if it were Someone you cared about?

What if it were that stranger, left beaten, on the Street?
Would you stop to help then?

The Sheep and the Goats
Matthew 25:42-45

For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.'

"They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?'

"He will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.'

(emphasis added)

Kind of sounds like Jesus identifies with, the Poor, the Sick, the Imprisoned. Sounds like he wanted people to Help the down-trodden, doesn't it?

Well, Now that we have some vague idea, about "What would Jesus Do about Health Care" --

Maybe we need to start asking those self-centered Health Care Obstructionists --

What will THEY Do? ... DO Now? ... in this Age of Unbridled Greed?

Will they dig deep into that well of compassion, like Good Samaritan?

Or will they simply "Look the other way", for the sake of political expediency?

Luke 10:33 NIV

But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him.

Well, let's check the current record.

It kind of seems like the GOP will keep acting like the modern-day Pharisees ...

Here's Republican Senator Tom Coburn's reaction, when he sees a desperate Person in dire need --

How can Coburn so coldly say:

Heal yourself!

(Psst Lady, just ask your Neighbors for Help -- BUT Don't ask the Government!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

Will the GOP keep acting like the modern-day self-centered Pharisees ...

Here's Republican Senator Chuck Grassley, telling someone he represents, Someone without adequate Health Care --

Go Get a Better Job, Man! -- Why don't you Go Work for the Government!

(and then you can be like me!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

It's amazing that the conservative Rightwingers justify their Health Care Obstructionists, like Grassley, with the Political need to Block Reform, with excuses like:

"Grassley's keeping a finger in the dike of Health Insurance Reform,
and keeping Republicans informed, so they can complain loudly" --

to enable them to just Keep On Obstructing!

Sen. Grassley Holds Town Hall on Health Care

Here are a few introspective Questions for those modern-day hypocrites (especially those who get their Talking Points from Fox News) --

Are you acting like the "Good Samaritan"?

Are you looking out for "the least among us"?

Are you really?

Dudes, WWJD?

What will YOU do, about helping the Sick and Needy?

About helping the 1 in 7 Americans WITHOUT Health Insurance?
About the 1 Million Americans who go bankrupt each year for lack of adequate Health Insurance?

Remember, there, but for the Grace of God, go I ...

Mark 8:36 NAS

For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?

We each must choose ... which Values to pursue, in Life:

Luke 16:13 NAS

"No servant can serve two masters; [...]
You cannot serve God and Wealth."

(emphasis added)

Choose wisely ... and Live wisely ...

Decide to HELP your Neighbor ... no matter WHAT their stature in Life currently happens to be.

Because, THAT IS what Jesus would Do!

(or so his teachings, would imply ...)

Is Health Care a Right, a Privilege, or simply a MUST HAVE that WE need to provide to fulfill our Human Condition???

Hypocrites -- Must one day face, the Consequences of their Deeds --
That Day can't arrive soon enough ...

Great diary, jamess (3.00 / 3)
You make this point very well. I shall add to it with a good quote I found:

Rev. Jim Rigby: "when we talk about helping the poor, we're called Christians. When we actually help the poor, we're called Socialists."

So true.....

that's a great quote (3.00 / 3)

and a great Frame!

http://go.sojo.net/campaign/he...

In the face of negative ads, partisan rhetoric, and a news cycle filled with fear and half-truths about health-care reform, Christians must affirm that we believe in: quality, affordable access to life-giving services for all people.

Sign "A Christian Creed on Health-Care Reform" and a copy of it will be sent to your members of Congress. In addition, after you sign you will be given a link to Sojourners' free discussion guide about health-care reform, to help guide discussions in your congregation or small group.

thx kenshin for the link (3.00 / 1)

that is good to see,

some sticking to their values.
