You're From Ohio, You Idiot, Don't Screw With Our Train

Burning the Midnight Oil for a Brawny Recovery

"Tell me how spending $8 billion,"
asked House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) on the floor,
"in this bill to have a high-speed rail line between Los Angeles and Las Vegas is going to help the construction worker in my district."

(h/t Matthew Yglesias)

Now, lets look at the Federally Designated Corridors -- and you have to have a designated corridor to get any of the $8b.

Yup, no corridor to Vegas. Oh, and what's that we see ... two, count 'em TWO corridors through Ohio ... Cleveland to Chicago and Cleveland / Columbus / Dayton / Cincinnati.

BruceMcF :: You're From Ohio, You Idiot, Don't Screw With Our Train
Indeed, the Triple-C route ... which at present has no interurban rail service, because back in 1960, Columbus was a little cow town of 300,000, and its growth to a metro area of 1m+ happened during Amtrak's long struggle to avoid the ax ... goes right past Boehner's District.

And look more closely, at the full fledged Ohio Hub:

... if we can roll out the system, Boehner's constituents will be able to catch a train in outer northern Cincinnati or Dayton and get to Philadelphia, or New York, or DC. Now, y'all who live in big metro areas might think that's a long trip ... but the reality for someone living in Boehner's district heading to one of those destinations is normally a much longer drive to an airport, then a puddle jumper to a hub, then a flight to the destination.

And getting "shovel ready" projects on the corridor is straightforward. Since the Ohio Hub is designed along existing rail rights of way, there are few alignment headaches to hammer out. And since it is targeted to being a 110mph Rapid Rail system, one of the essential projects required will be upgrading crossings to the quad gates, speed-sensitive train detectors, and improved signaling to allow crossing at 110mph.

That is, a large number of small upgrade projects, spread across the state. Including projects just east of Boehner's own district, therefore certain to be employing some of Boehner's own constituents.

Look, Boehner -- can I call you John? No? How about Clueless Dick, would that be alright? -- you are trying to undermine work for your own constituents, to get a substantial down payment on a transport system that will, one day, be highly valued by your constituents.

When they do the redistricting, I hope they take your "safe" Republican district and do to you what you SOB's did to Franklin County Democrats after the 2000 Census. I just want to see you defending your fight against jobs and economic opportunity in Southwestern Ohio in a swing district.

Now that would be Change that I would Really Truly Believe In!

Progressive Populism is inherently a coalition project ... (3.00 / 3)
And a Rapid Rail project like the Ohio Hub can be an important part of the political glue for the coalition ... its got the Energy Independence dimension to appeal to the populist, nobody can complain about domestic content requirements because in rail, everybody does it so there's nobody to raise the complaint, its got the energy and Carbon Footprint reduction, and HSR stations can act as transit anchors to get public transport out of the big cities out to suburban areas, to satisfy the progressive.

And it seems ... the Republicans see the threat that it poses, and are aiming to try to kill it if they can.

now I'm confused (3.00 / 2)
Are you saying there won't be money appropriated for a Maglev between southern California and Las Vegas? Why did other reports say there was?

Also, Iowa doesn't seem to be in that map of "federally designated corridors" for high-speed rail, but it is included in the Ohio hub map. Does that mean that any rail extensions to Iowa would just be regular-speed?

The reports said there was because they were ... (3.00 / 2)
... transcribing what Boehner and his script-writers were saying.

The money is for HSR projects in Federally-designated HSR corridors. Nevada is in the process of preliminary studies right now, so they are not even ready to apply for designation, let alone ready to apply for funds under the Stimulus bill.

Many of the proposed systems only have part of their lines as designated corridors ... the Ohio Hub and the Midwest Hub are two cases in point. For example, the Ohio Hub was successful in getting designation for the first stage Cleveland/Columbus/Cincinnati corridor.

That only means that is the corridor they want to start with.  The Buffalo/Cleveland, Pittsburgh/Cleveland, Pittsburgh/Columbus, Columbus / Fort Wayne (connecting through to Chicago) and Toledo/Detroit lines are not in the lead-off stage of the Ohio Hub - they'll apply for designation for those corridors after the first stage of the project has been successfully launched.

Same thing with the Iowa leg of the Midwest Hub ... its not Stage 1 of the Midwest Hub, so there is no immediate reason to push for designation.

But the Midwest Hub is planned for 110mph, so when they do start work on the Iowa leg of the Midwest Hub, it will be a 110mph Rapid Rail system, not a 79mph Amtrak speed train.

We're close to peak oil and some experts think (3.00 / 4)
peak oil has already happened. Cheap oil is a momentary illusion because of the recession. Rail is much more energy efficient than trucks, cars, planes, and buses. Warren Buffett has been investing in rail of late.

Abstinence programs breed hypocrites.

When you look at European and Japanese rail systems (3.00 / 4)
America is put to shame. My spouse has travelled on business within Germany and Japan using their rail systems and was very impressed. We have much catching up to do. Rail makes sense for America because of the huge distances between major cities and the huge amount of consumer goods hauled cross-continent.

Abstinence programs breed hypocrites.

Boehner can´t read very fast (3.00 / 2)
That´s what he said the other day. Maybe his crying all the time blurs his vision.

Limited literacy is no excuse ... (3.00 / 2)
... he should hire staff members who can find projects running through his district with one hand tied behind their back.

Oh I don´t think it´s about limited literacy (3.00 / 1)
He´s a spoiled brat crybaby. I don´t see how the people of Ohio continue to elect him. On the other hand there are many bad representatives from TX, so who am I to quetion other State´s electorates?

boehner slams 1100 page document on the ground.  none of you have read any of this!  how can anyone have read every last page in the last 24 hours!  it's impossible!  even though we have the mother of all congressional summary programs at our fingertips, it's impossible that you all know what was in this bill!

and this!  slams another large doc on the ground. this is supposed to be the findings of the IPCC on global warming!  i've not had the time to read this, and i never will!  you can't make me!

and what about this!  slams the entire encyclopedia britannica on the ground...  how are we supposed to know any of this, when there are so many pages??!  did you read book O-P on the the pika, genus ochotona, and its dietary habits and shrinking habitat???  not a one of you!  for shame on all of you!

and this one, i know i haven't read this one, and none of you have either!  slams the bible on the ground. hundreds and hundreds of pages, and you know that no one here has really read every last page!  how am i supposed to simply approve of this document???
